Be Drunk – Charles Baudelaire

In class we talked about how we felt Charles Baudelaire’s advice to “be drunk” meant to be passionate. I think it is important to be passionate in life. I believe that one of our purposes in this life is to have joy. One who is passionless in life, is likely one who is also unhappy. When I find something that interests me, I let myself become consumed by it. I love music, and because I let it consume me, I now own around eight different musical instruments. Some of which, I don’t even know how to play yet. But I find joy in learning how to do so.

Just a few weeks ago, I had nothing to occupy my time, and decided that I should try my hand at making furniture. Now, I am almost finished upholstering a set of two chairs made completely from scratch. My knowledge has increased because of it. I think that’s one of the other main reasons to be “drunk”. If we are feasting upon things, our knowledge of those will increase, it’s about self-improvement. When I started I had no idea how to build a chair. Now that I’ve done it, I could do it again, and do it better.

I wish everyone would find something to be passionate about in this life.
